Celebrating 25 Years of Innovation: 2010 — The Release of the USB-Powered DTU-215 Portable Modulator

DekTec had been developing PCIe modulators since 2006, but then we asked ourselves: Why not create a fully USB-powered modulator for terrestrial and cable television standards?

It turned out to be a great idea.

The DTU-215 was successful from the start. During the 2010s, anyone walking around a broadcast or consumer-electronics trade show would likely have spotted these distinctive boxes connected to laptops and being used for chipset demonstrations, set-top-box testing, and DTV receiver development.

The DTU-215 also found a home on the desks of many RF engineers. Its fanless design meant completely silent operation, while its USB interface made it easy to generate customized RF signals directly from a laptop.

For engineers testing a newly compiled DTV software stack, it was an exceptionally convenient tool.

After more than a decade as a leading portable DTV signal generator, the DTU-215 was succeeded by the DTU-315.

The new model expanded its capabilities by adding satellite modulation standards and higher-frequency operation. The DTU-315 is still a strong seller today, as it supports ATSC 3.0, DVB-S2X, and DAB+, among many other standards.

Some say the DTU-315 looks like a lightsaber. Perhaps the Force was with us when we designed it—although this one generates invisible RF signals instead of visible light.
